LibreOffice Writer – Page numbering

Last Updated 9 November 2024

I have a document that contains a front page and a table of contents page. I do not want page numbers on the first two pages, but want to start page numbering after the table of content page. So, I want the page numbering to start on page 3 and I want the page numbering to show the text “1”.

This is easiest done in a fresh document and the text copied in afterwards.

  • Insert two new pages with ctrl+enter
  • Go to Styles / Manage Styles, this opens the Styles sidebar
  • Click on the Page Styles button
  • Right click anywhere in the Styles sidebar and choose New
  • Name the new style whatever you want
  • Click anywhere in page 3 of 3
  • Go to Format / Paragraph / Text Flow
  • Mark the “With page style” box and choose the new style you made
  • Mark the “Page number” box and choose the page number you want as your first page number

You can now insert a footer on Page 3 of 3 (Page1). Then choose “Insert Page number” in the Footer drop down menu. Now the numbering should start on “1”.
