Sourdough bread – “Dutch oven”

Last Updated 9 November 2024
We adopted a sourdough starter and after finding my sourdough-mentor in the internet, Culinary Exploration, I realized that baking sourdough bread can be quite easy. I am now baking at a somewhat regular basis, following the instructions from this video as a basis for further experimentation.
When I started out I had to find something to bake the bread in and I decided to make something like a dutch oven. We had two iron pans both in use, but we really just needed one of them and I decided to use one for the base of the oven. The left one was the better choice since it could be repurposed non-destructively, I just had to unscrew the handle. I made a 3D-printed part to keep the handles screw in place for storing.

The next step I was not as sure about. We had this really nice old iron pot that sometimes is very useful. To use it as a top for the dutch oven I had to cut the ears off the pot. This really felt like vandalism but I used an angle grinder and cut them off, then I used a hand file to clean up.

The pot fits nicely in the pan and works perfectly as a “dutch oven”. I have not regretted the choice to cut the ears off the pan at all, the dutch oven makes nice sourdough bread and the pot can still be used as a pot using oven cloth or gloves.

I also designed and 3D-printed a dough scraper with Culinary Explorations recipe on. It shows the weight after each ingredient, so I do not have to do any calculations while baking. The design files for the dough scraper can be found at: Printables
