The owls are not what they seem

My friend have these owls that were suppose to light up. but the electric components was so old that she, wisely enough, did not want to use them.

I got the task of trying to wake them back to life by replacing the electrics. One of the owls had some really old and beautiful parts with the braided cables and brass socket.

On this owl I had to modify the mounting screw since I wanted to use the original mounting screws on both owls.

I had to do some minor adjustments to the brackets for the new sockets. They had to be bent to the right angle for the individual owl, and the holes for the mounting screws had to be enlarged.

To add some protection for the porcelain, I glued on some felt furniture pads to the brackets before assembling everything.

The owls now light up and I think they look beautiful.

While working on the owls I noticed they both had these weird hole patterns, one in the top of the head and the other in the neck. I could also see that there was some sort of chamber inside the owls.

After some online research I found out that they actually are perfume lamps. You pour perfume or scented oil in the chamber of the owl and, if using a traditional incandescent bulb, the heat from the bulb will evaporate the perfume. The owls are NOT what they seem!
